Here's how Urban Airstream began...
Urban Airstream started with five Airstreams in a parking lot in Rockford, Michigan. The only things that we had in common, really, were our Airstreams and our love for them. We sat there in this parking lot during what happened to be the weekend of Harvest Festival in Rockford, and the last voting weekend of ArtPrize in Grand Rapids. Because of our proximity to these events, and because it was such an unusual location for a group of trailers, we quickly drew a large crowd. And much to our surprise, people who came to our urban campsite from viewing ArtPrize entries in downtown Grand Rapids even tried to vote for us, thinking that we were a living art entry in the competition! Through social media and news media sharing, we quickly found out what "going viral" means. And through all of this, we realized: gathering a group of Airstreams in a unique place could really only benefit that location.
What is the mission of Urban Airstream?
Socially, within the group of Airstreamers, it brings a group together that might not otherwise find themselves together. Common interest in Airstream brings together a like-minded, eclectic group of individuals. While it's no secret that Airstreams have gathered in large groups for years, it's the philanthropic mission to highlight small towns across America that sets Urban Airstream apart. When landing in any particular town, we have become a vehicle that drives interest in some of the greatest little towns that are, all too often, only driven through. Each town has a story, and our goal is to get those that are just driving by on any given day to stop and hear it. Oh, the things that you can learn in a small town coffee shop, where they dedicate a drink to a patron that's just turned 100. Or at the barber shop, where there is no shortage in talk about the grand slam hit the night before. Or that unique little shop that has a story behind every piece that it sells. This is small town America. And we want you to see what you've been missing.

What makes urban Airstream unique?
There is no doubt that we are unique, but it is the WE that makes us unique. Any time you bring together a large group of people with a positive mission, you end up with positive results. Who are the WE? The WE are those who travel from near and far with their iconic Aluminum trailers in tow, and all those who come to visit to see what all the excitement is about. As WE gather, great things happen, stories are shared, and the mission begins. A stroll down the sidewalk, and you'll see the cute and quaint little shops, the taming of hair in a beauty salon, the postal clerk that knows everybody by name, the puppy in the pet shop window... but looking beyond main street, you may find a broken backboard on a public basketball court, a broken teeter-totter in the local park, or a sign that reads, "raising funds for musical instruments," or a cool new startup with the same hopes and dreams of one that's been there for 50 years. It is these things in small towns that are sometimes stifled. Not because of lack of interest, but lack of funds. This is the real story of small town America, and one thing we soon forget as we drive through these small towns is that all towns were small once. So that leisurely stroll that leads us behind the scenes of main street may just open the eyes and hearts of those willing to provide a little hope.
